Making Money Online

If you really don’t like the idea of becoming bar staff, or flipping burgers at your local fast food joint in an effort to raise some beer money during your time as a student, you should look into the prospect of making money online. There are many different ways in which you can earn a crust through the internet – in this article we’ll touch on the top five ways to make cold, hard cash online.

Become a freelancer

Becoming a freelancer is actually pretty easy on the internet – you don’t even need any formal qualifications in order to kick start a part time job as a freelancer (qualifications do help, though). Whether you learnt how to build sexy looking sites during your IT classes in secondary school, or you’re a dab hand at writing funny blog posts – you’ll have no trouble finding work on the internet as a freelancer.

Sites like Elance, Guru and oDesk are all full of hungry buyers who are after a plethora of different skills. Some buyers are after technical guest posts on precision engineering – others are after simple, one-page websites. Check these sites out and see which jobs catch your eye!

Sell things

Another great way to make money online is to sell things – anything at all! It’s up to you to decide how seriously you want to take it – you might just want to raise a bit of short term cash, in which case you can rifle through drawers and shelves and find old DVDs and phones to sell. You might want a longer term source of cash though, in which case you’ll need to start a business. In order to start a business you need a plan and a good idea of different products you’d like to stock.

Selling things online is pretty easy thanks to marketplaces like Amazon and eBay. All you have to do is make a listing for the product or products you’d like to sell – then hopefully you can watch the sales roll in. Another way to sell things online is to start your very own website – it may take a while for it to gain some traction, but it’ll be well worth it. Promoting your own website poses its own set of problems, but the best way to market it will definitely be through SEO, paid clicks, and of course social media.

Become a pro blogger

Believe it or not there is an awful lot of money to be made through blogging. You can literally blog about anything you like too. The key to making money as a pro blogger is to build up a huge following, then look at the different ways in which you can monetize your website. Some sites will be able to flog advertising space directly to big companies – other blog owners will have to use a generic advertising solution like Google’s AdSense.

If you already own a blog that gets a good amount of traffic make sure you monetize it today – it doesn’t matter whether it’s a “standalone” blog on your own domain and hosting – or just a free blog from, or – you can still monetize it. If you don’t already own a blog, think of your hobbies, then make a decision on what to build your blog around. Subjects like fashion, cars and financial topics are always a big hit with advertisers who are constantly looking for new sites to place their banners on. When using advertising networks like AdSense you’ll also find that the cost per click is several pounds in these niches – which means you can earn rather a lot of money even if just a couple of your users click adverts each day.

Becoming a pro blogger takes a lot of time – but it’s a really enjoyable way to earn some cash.

Get into affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is a really big industry – but there’s a chance that you’ve never even heard of it before. An affiliate marketer is basically someone who refers a user to another site where that user makes a purchase – the affiliate marketer then earns a commission for referring that user. It’s very simple, and extremely profitable.

All kinds of different websites and companies participate in affiliate schemes; from airport parking to buying gold ingots through the post. It’s up to you to find a niche to exploit, then find an affiliate scheme that will allow you to make money. Affiliate marketing is a multi million pound industry – so there’s definitely room for new comers. Just remember that the challenge in affiliate marketing is getting traffic to your website in the first place!

Offer gigs on Fiverr is a micro-jobs site. It’s not like other jobs sites like Elance, Guru or oDesk because jobs on Fiverr all cost the same – $5. Fiverr is a very fun site to use – and if you think up a really original idea you can make a huge amount of money from it. Just have a quick look on Fiverr and you’ll see some of the crazy gigs people offer – they include girls making videos pretending to be your partner, or even writing custom messages plastered across breasts. Other successful gigs on there include a bloke who pretends to be skydiving whilst reciting a message that you’ve asked him to read – and a plethora of marketing gigs including link building and announcing messages on social media.

If you can think outside of the box and come up with a really original idea there’s a lot of money to be made from Fiverr. Don’t forget however you won’t receive the full $5 – Fiverr take a cut too.

Making money online can be done in many, many different ways. If you don’t fancy a normal job like every other student, use your imagination and try to make some cash on the internet!
